‘Succession leads to success with family businesses’ was the message that Glenn Cooper, Chairman of world-renowned Cooper Brewery had for his audience at last night’s South Australia’s Finest Beer, Wine, Food and Company event.

Held at the Next Generation Memorial Drive, the elegant affair was organised by national accounting firm RSM Bird Cameron and attended by the firm’s clients and supporters who were business leaders from a range of businesses.

Family-owned Coopers Brewery has been brewing a range of quality beer products since 1862 and Mr Cooper is a fifth generation Cooper.

Mr Cooper’s insights into the Coopers family brewery history, branding, marketing, and sponsorship were insightful for all the business people present at the function. His insights into the successful defence against a hostile takeover bid on the unlisted public Coopers Company by a large multi national brewer demonstrated the Coopers family’s determination to successfully take on a much larger foe and proved a valuable lesson for all businesses in a competitive market place.

The Coopers brand has been going from strength to strength with the recent release of yet another new product, a light golden full strength beer, to compliment the already successful range of Cooper’s beers in the market.

RSM Bird Cameron’s director Terry Rodoni said that iconic family businesses such as Coopers account for 67 per cent of the private business sector in Australia and employs more than half of the Australian workforce.

RSM Bird Cameron director Brenton Scott added that Mr Cooper’s presentation demonstrated the importance of succession planning for family businesses so that they continue to survive and grow. It was also a great example of how SMEs can successfully compete in a market place against much larger competitors.
