Internode gets Naked in Tasmania

Jim KellettNational broadband trailblazer Internode today launches its NakedExtreme services in Tasmania, creating the opportunity to fill in many metropolitan broadband blackspots.

Internode’s Extreme broadband services are delivered to customers from telephone exchanges equipped with Internode’s own DSLAM equipment. As a result, Internode can deliver faster and better quality broadband services at greater distances from the telephone exchanges than many of its competitors.

NakedExtreme services extend broadband reach from 4.1 km to as far as 7.5 km. This increases potential broadband coverage area for an exchange from 52 square kilometres to more than 176 sq km.

NakedExtreme delivers a broadband service over a phone line with no dial tone. As well as offering low-cost, high-quality calls via the NodePhone VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service, NakedExtreme eliminates the need for a ‘dial tone' service rental that typically costs about $30 per month.

Although Internode launched NakedExtreme nationally in August last year, Tasmania was left out due to the lack of competitive backhaul services across Bass Strait. Today’s launch follows Internode last month gaining access to the Basslink fibre-optic cable, which offers viably priced backhaul.

Internode product manager Jim Kellett said the availability of NakedExtreme in Tasmania would expand rapidly during the next six months. “We are installing our own equipment in an extra 10 telephone exchanges,” he said. “That expansion will make Internode's NakedExtreme and Extreme ADSL2+ services available to more than 90,000 Tasmanian premises, including over 12,000 businesses.”

A NakedExtreme service costs just $10 more than the equivalent Extreme ADSL2+ service: As it incurs no voice line rental fee, customers typically will save about $20 a month with this service. It also avoids the inconvenience of paying a separate third party bill to rent a voice line service.

NakedExtreme is available in Home, SOHO & Business plans, which offer generous download quotas, no charge for uploads; five email accounts and personal webspace: unmetered online games, radio stations and other cool content, free dialup account and global roaming.
