National broadband company Internode last week won a prestigious Environmental Responsibility Award 2009 Communications Alliance and CommsDay Awards in Sydney.
Internode’s 2009 win of the Environmental Responsibility Award follows last year’s accolade when managing director Simon Hackett as named the Telecommunications Ambassador for 2008. During the past two years, Internode has taken major steps to minimise its impact on the environment. Despite its electricity costs rising three-fold during the past four years, Internode has stepped up to accept its obligations as a responsible corporate citizen by ensuring its environmental effects are mitigated fully.
Internode’s green initiatives include: - Establishing CO2-neutral status for its national operations in early 2008
- Contracting to use 100 per cent “GreenPower™” for all its operations from September 2008
- Introducing virtualisation technology at its data centres in 2007 to reduce power consumption
- Moving its headquarters to a modern building with energy-saving designs and practices
- Recycling cardboard boxes & paper and sending obsolete computers to metal scrap retailers
- Using solar-powered microwave towers to deliver broadband coverage on SA’s Coorong region
- Selling ROHS-compliant routers that meet Europe’s rigorous environmental standards.
Internode CEO Patrick Tapper said green technologies played an important part in Internode's planning. "Environmental responsibility become part of Internode’s competitive advantage,” he said. “Although they cost a bit more to set up, green initiatives can contribute to reducing our operating costs in the long haul.” CommsDay (Communications Day Australasia) is the nation’s most respected source of daily telecom industry news and commentary, currently celebrating its 15th anniversary of continuous publication.
