Billion releases 5200 firmware fix for Windows XP SP3
PC Range
June 07, 2008

Leading broadband device manufacturer Billion has announced firmware upgrades for its BiPAC 5200-series routers that resolve problems arising from installing Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Windows XP.

Although Windows XP SP3 has been available for manual download from Microsoft since May 6, it is expected to become an automatic download during the coming next week, causing more people with an “unpatched” Billion BiPAC 5200 router to experience problems.

People who upgrade their computer or notebook to Windows XP SP3 will find their BiPAC 5200 router, if it uses specific firmware versions, will crash and reboot constantly. The affected BiPAC 5200 firmware versions are 2.9.8.x and 2.11.0.x~2.11.33.x.

Firmware, which describes software embedded within a hardware device, can be upgraded by a relatively simple procedure. There is no impact on BiPAC 5200 series routers if the firmware is 2.10.x.x. Customers can check their firmware version by viewing Appendix A.

PC Range managing director Raaj Menon said only a few users had reported problems since Microsoft began offering the Windows XP SP3 as a manual download last month. “However, as Microsoft plans to make Windows XP SP3 an automatic upgrade this month, the number of affected routers may increase significantly,” he said.

"We want to let any customers with affected BiPAC 5200 know about this issue so they can download the new firmware in order to avoid experiencing any problems.”
