After a seven-month suspension, national broadband leader Internode has re-launched its high-speed HOME ADSL2+ services in Tasmania, in advance of competitive backhaul prices to the mainland.
The decision makes Internode’s entire range of ADSL2+ broadband plans now available in Tasmania, including entry-level HOME services. Internode will also add 46 ADSL2+ equipped telephone exchanges to its Tasmanian reach from mid December after last week signing an ADSL2+ wholesale agreement with Telstra.
In May, Internode suspended sales in Tasmania of its fastest HOME broadband plans due to unaffordable backhaul capacity across Bass Strait. Because Bass Strait backhaul is limited to a monopoly supplier, Telstra, it is much more expensive for Internode to transfer data between Tasmania and Victoria than it is to move data between Australia and the US.

roadband device manufacturer Billion collected another accolade this week when it was awarded the PC Authority 2008 Service and Reliability Award for Best Wireless Router.
PC Authority's 2008 Reliability and Service awards attracted more than 20,000 respondents, making it the most-comprehensive technology survey ever done in Australia.
Billion and Dynalink jointly received the PC Authority 2008 Service and Reliability Award for Best Wireless Router. Survey results will be published in the January issue of PC Authority magazine. That edition also includes a review of the Billion BIPAC 7402NX router, which supports draft 802.11n wireless and 1Gb LAN networking as well as 3G and ADSL2+ connectivity.
Raaj Menon, managing director of Billion’s Australian distributor PC Range, said the award recognised the quality and value for money provided by Billion products. “This confirms Billion’s reputation as Australia’s most trusted router brand,” he said.

Adealdie-based network specialist MIMP has installed one of the fastest privately-owned wireless networks in the world to help SA Heart Centres deliver better patient care.
When Australia’s largest cardiology group, SA Heart Centres,
recognised that
its computer network was holding back its development by an inability
to transfer large medical imaging files between branches, it turned to MIMP connecting solutions.
Using
secure 120 megabit-per-second licensed microwave links, MIMP
installed one of the fastest privately owned wireless networks in the world, which went live in November 2007.
The major benefit has been better patient care through providing
immediate access to centrally stored patient records from any SA Heart
Centres cardiology branch throughout metropolitan Adelaide. “MIMP has future-proofed our technology with a high
performance network and predictable costs. We are gaining a rapid
return on our investment," said SA Health Centres past chairman Dr Bill Heddle.
The full SA Heart Centres case study follows:

Internode’s inaugural Chief Information
Officer is Mike Damms, a technical team builder who has worked for the world’s
top telecommunication companies after 15 years in the Royal Navy.
With a CV that includes roles at Vodafone UK, Avaya,
Lucent and Motorola, Mike was attracted to the CIO role with Internode by the
opportunity to work with “a company that has a very good reputation as a market leader in
the Internet space”. “Internode is extremely innovative,” said Mike.
“This job
is a chance to help take an organisation that has grown to a significant size
to the next level by evolving its corporate structure while keeping its
excellent culture.”
Internode
announced in August that it planned to appoint its first CIO as part of a
management restructure that saw Patrick Tapper appointed CEO, working alongside
managing director Simon Hackett.
Patrick
Tapper said Mike Damms provided an independent perspective to oversee information
systems that had evolved as Internode had grown to its current size. “We are
pleased to welcome Mike as a key member of the team that is preparing Internode
to maintain its growth rate,” he said.
