Australia’s only all-electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, has returned to the Clipsal 500 motor race this year – 12 months after making its Australian debut there – with a world record under its seatbelt.
In October last year, the Tesla, driven by its owner, Internode founder Simon Hackett, smashed the world distance record for an electric vehicle by travelling more than 500km on a single charge in the inaugural Global Green Challenge. This achievement beat the previous world record by more than 110km. Video of this record breaking drive is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eaxl7i2wn-Y Internode, Australia’s largest privately owned broadband company, is using the Tesla Roadster to demonstrate the fact that it is possible to be both “green” and high performance.
Costing about AU$200,000 plus Luxury Car Tax, the Tesla Roadster delivers supercar performance, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in less than four seconds, has a top speed of 200 km/h and can routinely travel more than 350km on a single charge. The car takes as little as four hours to charge fully from empty. Australia’s first and only Tesla Roadster made its first public appearance at last year’s Clipsal 500, after the sleek sports car was air freighted from Tesla’s California factory for display at the high-octane race. The Tesla Roadster is on display at the Murray Walker’s Extreme Machines pavilion in the Clipsal 500 race area, at the eastern end of the Adelaide central business district. Simon is also looking forward to taking his Tesla on a few fast laps of the Clipsal 500 track each day!
