Northline’s million reasons to still love Alice after 26 years PDF  | Print |

National logistics company Northline is on track to break a freight milestone this year by delivering its one millionth tonne of freight to Alice Springs – a record it reaches after supplying the town for 26 years.

Northline employs 15 people in Alice Springs, where it has operated long-haul freight services since the company was established in 1983. The company has as many as 40 incoming trucks a week as well as the rail links from Adelaide and Darwin.

Northline uses its presence in Alice Springs as a distribution hub for central Australia, providing state-of-the-art warehousing for customers that distribute products through the central region.

Northline is an Australian logistics company that specialises in servicing remote locations throughout the country. The privately-owned business, which employs more than 400 people nationally, provides freight, warehousing, international freight services and undertakes special projects throughout Australia.

Northline operates multi-modal road and rail freight services to Alice Springs, which is at the heart of its national network. It also runs a pickup and delivery fleet within the town, providing a convenient service linking customer premises to Northline’s road and rail links which connect with the rest of Australia.

Northline prides itself on its continuity of service to the Alice, a record that is epitomised by the fact that its Alice Springs manager, Darryl Wilson, has held this role for the past 13 years. “Last year, we celebrated our silver anniversary in the town, after being with the Alice for 25 years,” he said.

“Despite the global financial crisis, we are experiencing record demand for our freight and logistics services, especially to the NT. After reviewing our records, we’ve identified that we’re on track to deliver our millionth tonne of freight to Alice Springs. It’s a great demonstration of how Northline has succeeded in providing Alice Springs businesses with credible and cost effective freight services since 1983.”

Since 1998, Northline has worked from a 1500-square-metre building at its McDonald Street depot. As well as freight services to and from the town, Northline offers warehouse management services, allowing customers to store their stock at its distribution centre rather than run their own storage facility.

A highlight of Northline’s business year is its annual golf day in Alice Springs, held each August, which brings together dozens of business people, both from the town itself and national customers to attend this prestigious golfing event on a “green” oasis.

Northline CEO Craige Whitton said the company used the annual golf day to highlight to customers nationally that Northline was still in love with Alice after 26 years. “By bringing customers to Alice Springs for this event, we’re putting a national spotlight on Northline’s facilities here as well as the opportunities the town offers to other businesses we work with,” he said.

“The Alice Springs golf course is an oasis in the desert that really focuses your golf swing. If you play golf like me and hook or slice the ball, you’ve got to crawl among the rocks and lizards to find it. It’s a unique golf course in Australia and our customers love the experience.”

Northline has a great deal of other community involvement in Alice Springs, ranging from community projects and charity fundraising to its support for the Finke Desert Race. Dubbed the greatest desert race in the southern hemisphere, the two-day race draws dozens of cars and dirt bikes for a harrowing round-trip journey between Alice Springs and Finke, 226km south east of the town.
