Weather wins chumby Oz content competition PDF  | Print |  E-mail

A clever widget that provides touchscreen access to Australian weather forecasts has won Internode's competition to pick the top local software for the popular streaming media device.

Launched in Australia last November, chumby constantly streams your favourite parts of the Internet to its 3.5 inch colour touchscreen.

Internode announced the national competition last month to encourage awareness and development of Australian content widgets - streaming software programs - for the chumby.

Competition winners were chosen last week, with the highest rated widget award going to community developer thinkquick for the Australian Weather Radar.

The program streams the latest satellite image of Australia from the Bureau of Meteorology. It provides touchscreen access to weather data including the four latest images, current temperatures of the capital cities and forecast information for each city.

As its prize, thinkquick will receive a chumby, a copy of Adobe Flash CS4 Professional and an $800 credit towards Internode services.

In a special category, Internode managing director Simon Hackett picked the Scenic Route game, from developer freman, as the most creative Australian-themed entry.

Simon described the Scenic Route game as: "Australian themed, a simple but non-trivial game, it's quite sophisticated in that it supports server-stored high scores and has a reasonable user interface".

The Scenic Route game developer will receive a chumby and a $200 credit toward Internode services.

Content and Communications Coordinator for Internode’s Content Services Group, Richard Burke, said the competition had succeeded in raising awareness of the chumby. “There are now 18 Australian widgets available whereas before the competition, there was only one,” he said.

“We really appreciate all the effort from the people who entered the competition. We would also like to thank our friends at APC and Adobe for promoting the competition and providing prizes.”
