Strong demand for new broadband plans has seen Internode increase the capacity of its national IP network by more than 130 per cent, including deployment of 10-gigabit links between capital cities.
A primary driver for Internode’s recent network upgrade was the success of the new plans it released in the second half of 2010, such as Easy Broadband “T-Shirt” plans, which deliver affordable access to broadband services with data quotas ranging from 150 gigabytes to one terabyte. As well as attracting new business, Internode found thousands of its existing customers migrated to these new plans, which deliver even more value for money than their previous services. The network upgrade saw Internode deploy five 10 gigabit per second (Gbps) links between Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, effectively boosting this inter-city network capacity by 150 per cent Internode has also boosted the capacity of its network links from Tasmania to the mainland by nearly 80 per cent to handle increased data traffic from its customers, including participants in the NBN Stage One trial. Internode Network Architect Daryl Collins said the network overhaul had increased the capacity of inter-city links as well as improving national capacity through a more efficient network design. “We’ve managed to replace 24 small-capacity links with these five high-capacity links,” he said.
“As well as making our national network simpler to manage, getting rid of that plethora of smaller links allows us to use our network much more effectively. While this improved design is invisible to customers, they benefit from Internode’s network continuing to evolve to meet their needs, whether that’s delivering highly responsive performance for online services and gaming or large data quotas for accessing IPTV and other data-rich content.” Internode is a national broadband company with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. As well as offering ADSL2+ broadband services at more than 1400 telephone areas nationally through wholesale suppliers, Internode has its own Agile DSLAM broadband equipment in operation or under construction at more than 200 exchanges in every state and territory of Australia. Internode is a privately-held company founded in 1991. Internode offers a wide range of value-added broadband services including more than 400 Internode WiFi hotspots nationally, NodeMobile Data 3G wireless broadband, Internode Business Connect Private IP networks, NodePhone VoIP telephony and a pioneering IPTV service through its partnership with FetchTV.
